Kohvik Energia sits quietly on Kaubamaja tn in central Tallinn, offering a slice of city life that feels a little paused in time. This cafe leans into a distinctly old-school Estonian vibe, one that recalls the Soviet era without veering into kitsch. If you imagine stepping into a place where time edges slowly forward, with simple decor and a muted soundtrack of elevator-style melodies, Kohvik Energia fits the bill.

Locals often drop in for a no-fuss breakfast or a mid-morning break, especially those who appreciate straightforward, hearty fare. The menu reflects this well—expect traditional pastries like kohupiimapirukas (curd cheese pies), the occasional seapraad hapukapsaga (pork with sauerkraut), and classic treats such as rhubarb cake and coffee with cake. It's less about culinary flamboyance and more about familiar flavors that pair well with a strong, dark coffee or a calming cup of tea.

The cafe draws a steady crowd of people who remember Tallinn's past decades or who enjoy a slower, quieter pace before the city’s more bustling spots claim their attention. It's also a practical stop for those waiting on a trolleybus or wandering nearby streets, offering a chance to settle in without fuss. The service is functional and straightforward—staff are helpful but not overly eager to engage, which gives the place an authentic, stoic feel that some might find refreshing.

Visiting Kohvik Energia feels best on a crisp morning or early afternoon when the light filters softly through its windows, and the hum of casual conversation mixes with the ritual of coffee being poured. If you’re after a glossy, trendy cafe experience, this is not it. But if you want a place where the atmosphere quietly echoes Tallinn’s layered history while serving solid, uncomplicated food and drink, it fits comfortably.

We had our breakfast here two days in a row. What a genuine little pearl of Tallinn. A cup of tea with a potato salad and piroshki was the best start to a day of strolling.

Found this place by coincidence. Has a iron curtain atmosphere. Very authentic. Staff at the counter were helpful but not overly friendly. I have a feeling it’s a bit a Estonian thing rather than be unfriendly. Reminds me of German hospitality in a way. But once you know them they tend to be very friendly. Cakes, coffee and tea were good. Recommend to visit before places like that disappear completely. Try the typical Estonian little savoury snacks. Rye bread with herring or cured salmon.

Nostalgia trip to soviet times (with the main difference being that the current place is clean, pleasant, and with adequate service). For a complete experience, it would be cool if they played authentic 70s-80s soviet music, but alas, just a generic elevator music from the speakers. Clientele tends to be people who remember the soviet times and who are spending time to wait for their trolleybus to travel home at old-timey part of Tallinn - Mustamäe. Highly recommended visit for tourists to get a glimps of the bygone era. Drop in for a reasonable priced pint of beer (4 EUR as of March 2024), simple breakfast, or coffee and a pastry. This is a place for a quick visit, and then move on.

This coffee place in Tallinn is the coolest spot in town. Very traditional almost old-fashioned with simple but very delicious bread and bakery. The minimalistic and clean space invites to enjoy a very rare atmosphere unique for this city. I recommend a visited! We love to come here every time we are in town.

Spacious café with an old fashioned atmosphere. Everything labelled with prices and menu in English, making it quick and easy to order. Rhubarb cake recommended.
